Phoebe Rivera-Taylor is a first-year public defender for those accused of violating the Sorcery Act. She’s bored to death, resigned to taking only slam dunk cases that her boss gives her, tasked with accepting plea deals on behalf of obviously guilty clients. Phoebe has no magical powers—she just wants to make sure that sorcerers are fairly judged by their peers. 

She found her career in Sorcery Law after her mother was killed in a sorcery accident, and her father was held criminally liable even though Phoebe knows that her mother consented to the spell. 

Jules Tarragon is a sorcerer specializing in recovering lost things for Mr. Dela Rosa’s Lost Things Emporium—If you lost it, we can find it. When recovering a lost item for a powerful client, he was unable to find it by the deadline. Out of anger, the client framed him for a magical triple homicide. His magical signature is all over the crime scene—in short, he’s guilty. Done deal. 

Convinced that his case is a lost cause, Phoebe tries to get Jules to take the deal that would lock him away forever, but allow him to avoid the death penalty. However, Jules insists that he’s innocent. If he can just find the lost item, he can prove his innocence, and the enraged client will make the charges go away. 

Phoebe agrees to try to help him, risking her career to do so, because the item Jules is looking for possesses the power to speak to the dead. If Phoebe could bring her mother back, even just for a moment, she could free her father. But sometimes, things that are lost are never found.
